Dog Day Morning Part Two

If you haven't already, see the dog cookies (part one) here.

Now on to dog food. This couldn't be simpler. We get the one pound chubs of 80/20 hamburger and use 1/2 pound per batch of food. I use canned vegetables such as green beans, sliced carrots, or mixed vegetables. I just learned that spinach is not so good for doggies, so am no longer using that one.

Next is white rice. I'm not sure of the exact measurements, but will share with you how I measure. Cup your hand and fill it with white rice to overflowing three times. So now you have rice, vegetables and meat in your pot. Now just fill with water. No you don't need to brown the beef first, just boil everything together.

Water: fill to an inch above the contents of your pot. Break up the hamburger to mix it with the water. This whole thing will resemble porridge, when you turn up the heat and bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes. Then what I do is turn the heat off, cover and let it sit, so that any excess water naturally absorbs into the rice. it turns out great every time.

The only downfall is that, unlike the dog cookies, this dog food comes out amazingly good like your naughtiest comfort food. Taste tester approved. A spoonful as soon as the lid comes off, just a drop or two of soy sauce and yummy, for us humans. Pretty soon, the anticipating stare of the dog, and by this time, the cat, shames us into putting a little treat straight from the pot into their respective dishes as well (leave off the soy for the critters), and there. Dog food is done for another couple days. Then it starts again.

A couple notes:
  • This does make good cat food as well. Our picky lil' Spot loves this stuff.

  • This can be a method for making an easy quick dinner for the family, just change up the ingredients to your taste. I've done different veggies, replaced white rice with brown, and usually do a 93/7 blend of hamburger. Water can be replaced with stock, add herbs to your taste, and you have a quick, tasty dinner... add a salad maybe. This dinner would resemble a skillet style dinner from a mix, but take less time at the stove.

  • If you don't have hamburger for your pets' meals, the recipe above can be used using canned tuna or chicken as well. That too is Spot approved!
