Dog Day Morning

Yup, we all gotta eat! That includes the fuzzy critters we got running around. Today is for our dog Tucker. Dog food and dog cookies need making. First up, dog cookies.

I got the inspiration from this homemade doggie treat site. Tuckie loves them so much more than the commercial variety. Ask yourself if you have pets... What would you do if you couldn't buy dog food anymore? What would you do if your dog couldn't or wouldn't eat commercial dog food anymore due to an illness? The answer is the same for both... you make them their own dog food out of what you already have in your pantry to feed your own human family. (Not to mention this makes great presents for the neighbor who either has everything, or maybe they're new to the 'hood and you don't know them too well yet. If they have a dog, bring a gift of homemade dog treats when you say hello.)

Here is my version of this recipe:

1c AP flour
1c whole wheat flour
1t sugar
1/2c flax seed, ground
1/2c dry milk
6T vegetable shortening
1/2c water
1 egg, beaten

This basically goes together like a biscuit dough. The first five dry ingredients are incorporated with the shortening, then mixed with the water and egg. You will end up with a stiff but still pliable dough to be rolled to 1/8" thickness and cut into cookies. If you have a cute dog bone cookie cutter, fine, it will be lovely... got one myself. I do have it on good authority that if you just cut them with knife into bite sized pieces, They are enjoyed just as much, and digest just as properly. Major tail wags for all!

Bake cookies in a 375 degree oven for 35 minutes. They smell
amazing while baking, but trust me on this... if you try one, go ahead... just know they're really bland. Yeah, we tried them too lol.

Your dog will love them!! Oh and word to the wise... doggies like doggie cookie dough as much as children love chocolate chip cookie dough. Don't leave your work area unattended... Some fuzzy butts may decide to help themselves!

Nonetheless, happy doggie! Woohoo!!
